"The Gunas of Prakriti & the Vrittis of Yoga"

The discovery of the gunas of Prakriti by the Indian rishis goes back to the period of Sankhya, if not earlier. How everything, animate and inanimate by today’s measure and standard, is influenced by balance, movement, and inertia, is a key bit of knowledge to possess. But India’s seers were not so interested in how nature writhed under these modes, and instead began to view them as properties of the mind that influenced the moods of living beings, both for better and for worse.

Vrittis, those waves of the mind that rise and fall continually, were also a key player in India’s development of its superb yoga psychology, and how the gunas influenced the mind’s thoughts became both an art for observing them and a practice in overcoming them — mastered in the end by perfect control of thoughts followed by their dissolution in meditation. Gunas and vrittis together will make up the substance of this class series, revealing valuable teachings for serious students of Yoga and Vedanta.
