Dharma, Svadharma, & Beyond Dharma
American River, July 15th – 21st
An ongoing tradition in the SRV fold, which has seen many souls, young and old, partake of its rare gifts, the summer retreat near the American River in Forest Hill, California, will again bless us with wisdom teachings correlative to the summer season holy days of Gurupurnima and Krishna Janmashtami. This retreat, with its constituent of youth and children, allows for a blend of teaching transmission that is both transforming and rare in this day and age. New facets are planned for this year’s retreat which will help engage and harmonize all members in this intimate sangha setting.
Children’s Retreat:
Children, ages 6 to approximately 13 have their own simultaneous retreat. Activities include “salute to the sun,” morning ritual and meditation, Vedantic stories and lessons, arts and crafts. Classes are held in a screened pavilion across the seasonal river and over the Dharma Bridge, which can be crossed only by those who learn the Upanisadic passphrase: Svasti vaha paraya tamasah parastat! Godspeed to you in crossing to the farther shore beyond all darkness! The children have their break with the adults and enjoy healthy snacks. After the late morning session everyone proceeds to the river for the afternoon. Upon return is a time of quiet reading, supervised by parents, followed by dinner. Children and adults attend evening satsang with Babaji, a precious close to a day full of truth and dharma.
Location/Setting: In the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, above the pristine American River untouched by any city as it flows from the mountains, is nestled a cabin amongst the pines, firs and madrones. In this setting we meet for classes, worship and meals. Dry weather makes open air camping a real joy under brilliant stars.
