Discharge From the Hospital of the World: Obtaining the Master Doctor’s Signature of Release

Quoting Swami Vivekananda, if we are to “strike off our fetters,” and release ourselves from “the bonds that bind us down,” to the prison-house of embodiment in this world, the special permission of the Lord and Mother of the Universe will be required. For, the world is a hospital, and souls attached to nature, objects, and pleasures due to being infected by the disease of desire, are its patients. Elixirs of self-discipline, pills of detachment, and injections of Brahmajnan from a specialist, are readily available for this clinging malady of ill-considered desire, but few patients will ingest them willingly. And gossip bantered around the various floors of the healing facility citing their initial bitterness, does not recommend them well to other sickly souls. Thus, the chief doctor signs his crucial signature on very few release forms.
