An important Upanisad held within the sacred Sukla Yajur Veda, the scripture titled “Niralamba” poses some 40 questions asked by both occupants of earth and seekers of freedom, alike.  These questions get answered in advaitic form by the rishi, whose intent it is, to quote the first sloka of the text, to “liquidate the misfortunes of living beings plunged in ignorance.”

The Sanskrit word Niralamba, broken into two parts, means “nir,” free of, and “alamba,” supports.  This signifies the nature of both Brahman and Atman, which rely upon nothing for existence; they are “self-existent.”  Niralamba is also a holy name for Sri Durga, the Divine Mother, Who is also known for needing nothing other than Her own presence and power to sustain Her.

This Upanisad delves deeply into the nature of bondage and liberation as well, posing some surprising insights about both – some which are radical and unconventional.
